Thompson & Morgan is to launch a new brand of peat compost – as a result of amateur gardeners’ disappointment at the quality of growing media available.
Incredicompost contains 80 per cent Irish peat mixed with 20 per cent wood fibre.
“When plants fail to grow, people blame us – but they don’t question the performance of their compost,” said Paul Hansord, T&M’s horticultural director, who added that the company had been “unhappy with the majority of consumer composts for several years”.
“We never ignore a complaint, and had seen the results of compost trials by Which? Gardening. So we decided to trial 20 types of compost. We found that some even inhibited germination.”
Paul said the worst performing composts were usually “totally peat-free”. He added: “There is no question that peat-free composts have come on a long way.
“But you have got to be a very good grower, in terms of getting fertilising and watering right, when using them,” he added.
Incredicompost, claims T&M, contains the finest Irish peat to create a “professional grower-quality, open textured compost that won’t squash or sit too wet after watering”.
A spokesman added: “Our trials were an eye-opener. The team was shocked at the difference between the best and worst composts.
“It is clear from the findings that choosing cheap composts, and those with a high percentage of local authority-supplied green waste, is a false economy for gardeners.”
